Reptiles and Writing

Mrs. Piercy's ClassroomStudents at CIS enjoyed a visit from author David Nieves.  He shared his knowledge of reptiles with the students and talked about why it is important to share what we know with others.  He talked about the Six Traits of Writing and how to take a broad idea and narrow it down to a topic that is manageable.  He told students that when they add their own voice to their writing, they make it fun for others to read.  Students enjoyed listening to his stories and seeing his interesting reptiles.

Pickle Day

Pickle Day
Mrs. Piercy's ClassroomAfter keeping our Kool-Aid pickles in the refrigerator for a week, today was the day we actually got to taste them. Everyone, including Mr. Cogdill, was willing to give them a try.  Opinions of how they tasted varied.  Read what our taste-testers had to say.

Beginning of the Year

Beginning of the Year
Mrs. Hoffman's ClassroomWelcome back to school!  We have enjoyed several weeks of school and we're starting to get into the swing of things.  The students have been working hard getting to know a new building, new playground, new staff, and new routines.  It's been a great couple of weeks as we continue to learn about each other.

"Kool" Treat

"Kool" Treat
Mrs. Piercy's ClassroomWhat better way to beat the heat than with a cool drink! Kool-Aid is Nebraska's state soft drink, and students enjoyed a Kool-Aid Jammer on a hot afternoon.

We also made Kool-Aid pickles by adding cherry Kool-Aid and sugar to a jar of dill pickles. After they have been refrigerated for a week, we will eat them. Koolickles are a popular treat in areas in the southern United States, so why not in Nebraska too!

Picture Day!

Picture Day is September 6th.
Don't forget to fill out the picture packet and send them back to school (earlier is better than later). CIS Picture retakes are scheduled for October 17th.

Green Grass!

Students took advantage of the cool morning and got together for a game of kickball.
A new sprinkler system was installed right before school started.  The students are looking forward to being able to play in the grass.  In the past, our playground area looked more like a sand lot.  We are spreading the kids out  to minimize the pressure on the fragile lawn.  Despite the recent surge in temperature the lawn is trying to bounce back.

Students Excel in Writing!

CIS students scored very will on the NeSA Writing last year in 4th grade.  80% of the students met or exceeded the standards compared to 69% of the students across the state.  We are proud of our students but understand maintaining these scores is not always easy.   NeSA Reading scores were closer to the state average with 79% of 3rd grade students meeting or exceeding the standards compared to 77% of the state.

Bus Safety

This week has been a lot of fun! We have enjoyed reuniting with old friends as well as making new ones.  We have also reviewed rules from the classroom to the playground.  Today we reviewed bus safety.  Children learned how to evacuate a bus safely!  We would like to thank all the bus drivers for keeping us safe across the district.

Open House - Thursday 1:15-2:45

Welcome Back to

Welcome Back to School!
We are looking forward to students arriving for the first day of school on August 15th.  Students may gather with their supplies on the playground until the bell rings at 7:50.    We line up  by classrooms and enter the building after the Pledge and morning announcements.  We begin and end our day earlier than the other buildings to help parents with pick-up and drop-off.  We ask that you come to the Intermediate School first.  The school day ends at 3:05 on a normal day.  We do have early outs (1:15) on the August 15th & 16th.
